So is an electrolyte something like salt dissolved in water, or it is a potato or lemon? I understand that it is the conductor, just not sure on what it materialistically is.

An electrolyte can be anything from an aqueous (that is, a solution that has something dissolved in water) solution to a fruit with citric acid. The more polar (or the greater the difference in electronegativities of the elements involved in the chemical bond, i.e. Na-Cl) the better the stronger the electrolyte.

So we need to first ensure the polarity of our battery/batteries is of enough difference to conduct electricity, and then we need to focus on amps and resistance?

Wait. So we aren't talking bout Gatorade electrolytes? So for our batteries the problem was we were sending the electricity the wrong way in the circuit.

Is there any electrolytes in a potato because you said electrolytes are in aqueous solutions.
